Once again this year, the Coalition for Safety is organising a conference focusing on the application of a design-led approach within the justice and security sector. During the conference, we will explore how we can take a fresh look at our current security system and, in doing so, work together to create new options.

Further details on the programme will follow shortly, but do make a note of the date in your calender!

The Seven Year Itch | For seven years now, the Coalition for Safety has been bringing two worlds together: the field of safety and security and the design field. Since then, designers and safety professionals have been working side by side on complex challenges. A fitting moment to take stock of this relationship: what creates attraction, where is there friction, and is it time to take the next step? Maarten Smith – Design researcher, Department of Industrial Design, Eindhoven University of Technology – takes you through the history of the Coalition for Safety. Drawing on ethnographic research, he explores the development of design practices and how they have evolved over time to address societal challenges. Ariane Epstein, Tiphaine Vidal and Sandrine Pirolles – designers at DITP, the French government's laboratory for public innovation – will explain how they harness the power of design to address safety and security challenges within the French government. They seem to be years ahead of Dutch practice, both in terms of the professionalism of their organisation and the position they have established over the years. Olof Schuring from the Ministry of Justice and Security and Linda Meijer-Wassenaar from the Netherlands Court of Audit are going on a first date during this Dutch Design Week. They will tell you about the creation of the government-wide exhibition De Staat van Samen, which you can visit during DDW. How will their first encounter unfold, and what will cause the inevitable awkwardness? Jord de Kat Angelino, Tessa Bloembergen and Emma Hoogenboezem from Studio Angelineau (Delft) show how they are developing de Schakelmachine together with the Ministry of Justice and Security: a physical installation designed as part of a new systems-thinking training programme that enables policymakers to learn through experience. What does it take from designers and a government ministry to build something like this together? You will also hear a series of personal confessions from: - Emy Bensdorp – Social designer, Reclassering NL - Jaap Warmenhoven – Social designer - Rick van Vliet – Coordinating Policy Officer for Knowledge and Innovation at the Directorate-General for Punishment and Protection at the Ministry of Justice and Security, and industrial designer - Isis Peene – Social designer at We Are Social Rebels - Marjon van Gelderen – Strategic Creative Lead, Police - Shruthi Venkat – Designer - Patrick van der Hijden, building the Public Design Coalition for a resilient society. - Tabo Goudswaard – Social designer and moderator - and others Date the Safe & Save the Date – Following the conference, during lunch, you can flirt with other visitors and try to arrange a second date.
