What if.. we co-created sustainable public spaces?

In collaboration with Erasmushuis Jakarta, Sustainable Public Spaces explores the possibilities of creating accessible and sustainable public spaces in Indonesian neighbourhoods that currently have no access to them. Jakarta, one of the most densely populated cities in the world, faces a severe shortage of freely accessible public spaces. At the same time, the demand for sustainable solutions that address climate change and circular material use is growing.

This lab brings together Dutch and Indonesian designers to develop innovative concepts that contribute to liveable communities. Through co-creation with residents, a design was realised that meets local needs and is based on bio-based and recycled materials. The results of this lab are shared in the form of a master plan, a prototype, and a materials and design guide, enabling other communities to benefit as well.

The Concept

This led to Rujak Plaza, a modular system for creating temporary public spaces. Inspired by the shared memory of preparing and eating rujak (Indonesian fruit salad), this concept helps communities temporarily transform paved streets into green meeting spaces.

Further Development

Following this lab, the Indonesian designers established Kampung Kollektief, an initiative dedicated to strengthening local communities through sustainable public spaces.

After the completion of this lab, the project expanded to Rotterdam, where the concept is being applied in the Tarwewijk neighbourhood. Here, research is being conducted on how urbanised, paved areas can be redesigned as green, communal spaces.
