The Giving City
What if.. cities gave back?
Cities are growing rapidly, and by 2050, nearly 70% of the global population will live in urban areas. This presents challenges in sustainability, liveability, and social cohesion. In collaboration with Sweco, three design studios explored how cities can not only reduce their impact but actively give back by strengthening ecological and social systems. Three design teams—Volle Grond, Fides Lapidaire, and Studio Kornelia Dimitrova & Massif Architects—developed innovative concepts for this regenerative city.
Inner Landscape
Volle Grond designed Inner Landscape, a concept that integrates meaningful spaces in new residential areas with soil regeneration. Seven reflection sites connect the city with water, air, fungal networks, and biodiversity, creating a symbiosis between urban living and nature.
The Give Shop
Social designer Fides Lapidaire introduced The Give Shop, a reverse gift shop that places giving at the heart of urban development. This pop-up concept, developed with Sweco, fosters social sustainability in urban environments.
New Train Stations
Studio Kornelia Dimitrova x Massif Architects explored what happens when train stations become more than just transport hubs. Their design team developed a strategic framework with future scenarios to transform stations into vibrant social and ecological meeting places.
